Derek and his family moved to Richfield, Utah in 1994 where he got his start in the newspaper business, working for the Richfield Reaper, where he spent more than twelve years. While in Richfield, he was recognized in July 2001, by the Richfield Chamber of Commerce as Richfield's Employee of the Month for his Excellent Customer Service.
He has always been very involved in the communities in which he has resided. While in Richfield he served with the Vernal Chamber of Commerce in many areas and was a member of the Vernal Lions Club. He also performed in several productions for the Sevier County Fair, performing such roles as Harold Hill (Music Man), Tommy Albright (Brigadoon), The Prime Minister (King and I) and many others.
Derek and his family relocated to Vernal in the summer of 2011. As a member of UBMedia, he has been involved with Chamber and currently heads the Business Development Committee. He has also donated time to assist with the auction for Trees for Charity. He has performed as a member of the Choir with UBOC as well as productions with the Outlaw Trail Theater. For the past two years, he has announced the ATV Rodeo for the Outlaw ATV Jamboree.
Derek currently serves as the General Manager for UBMedia, which publishes the Vernal Express, Uintah Basin Standard and Basin Nickel Ads. He is committed to the communities they serve and strives on a daily basis to provide the most accurate news and information to the communities served by these publications.
As a family, the Hoppers love spending time outdoors which often includes time on their boat. He and his wife also enjoy gardening and spend a great deal of time manicuring their yard.
