Jordan Clark’s creative path began in 2020 with the launch of Ninty1 Designs, where his hand-painted murals quickly became a familiar sight throughout Vernal. As projects grew in size and scope, Jordan brought on Tonya Merrell to help with mural work, and it didn’t take long to recognize her strong background in screen printing and apparel production. What started as collaboration on walls naturally evolved into a shared vision—creating something lasting together that blended art, quality, and service. In 2023, that vision became Inked Threads, a custom apparel shop built on creativity and collaboration.

Today, Jordan and Tonya own and operate Inked Threads, serving the Basin and surrounding areas with fast turnaround times, high-quality custom apparel, and in-house design that brings each customer’s vision to life. Their mission is to become the most reliable custom apparel shop in the Basin, while staying deeply connected to the community by supporting many youth activities and programs, such as local youth baseball and softball programs.

Jim and Debbie Davis, owners of Davis Food & Drug, moved to Vernal from

Jackson Hole, Wyoming in March 1988. At that time their 2 sons, CJ and Lee

respectively, were 4 and 2 years old. As the years have passed, both boys joined their

parents in the business and are now both taking an active role as owners of the family-

owned business.

The stores in Vernal and Roosevelt were formerly Safeway and then Farmer Jack

grocery stores. Upon purchasing the stores, Jim and Debbie converted them to IGA Su

per Centers. Throughout the 34 years of owning this grocery business, the family has

changed the name of the business several times, largely due to circumstances out of

their hands. A few years ago, they made the decision to put their own name on the

business, assuring the communities they plan to continue servicing their customers for

years to come.

Once settled in the community, they immediately joined the Chamber of

Commerce in both Vernal and Roosevelt, recognizing the value of being involved

in the community. They also encouraged their employees to get involved in the

community and volunteer in organizations and activities that interested them. The IGA

motto was and still is ''Hometown Proud" and although Davis Food & Drug is no longer

affiliated with IGA, they have never abandoned the "Hometown Proud" philosophy.

The Davis Family have continued to encourage their management teams at Davis

Food and Drug to carry forward the way of life of participating, giving, and contributing

to the community where they live and work. In tum, the management teams encourage the

store associates to do the same.

Consequently, the stores have participated in community events as varied as the

Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club, where we are the pickup and drop off location

for Santa's Community Effort. Davis also sponsors the Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo,

Storytelling Festival, Mayors Halloween Walk, Hotel Vernal Haunt, Dina-Soar Days,

Dino ½ Marathon and many other events around-town.

In addition to serving the community, the Davis family looks for ways to make

grocery shopping as easy and enjoyable as possible in an ever changing world. The

Davis family is consistently trying new technology and sales events to find ways to

interact with and help their customers have a pleasant shopping experience.

The Davis Family is honored to be recognized with this award and pledge to

continue working for and with the communities they serve.

Quarterly Outstanding Public Service Award: Pete Morphy

Pete Morphy was born in Modesto, California. Pete graduated high school from Hughson High school in Hughson, California. Pete grew up helping his grandpa farm walnuts and amonds (they are almonds on tree and then you shake the “L” out of them). Pete has built a life centered on family, community, faith, and service. After serving a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Manaus, Brazil, Pete married his wife Kati in Vernal, Utah. He graduated from Utah State University–Uintah Basin with a degree in business management and went on to build a career in community banking. He currently serves as President of Grand Valley Bank in Vernal, Utah . He has worked at the bank since 2012.

Deeply committed to the Vernal community, Pete stays actively involved in a variety of local organizations. He is a member of the Vernal Dinah-mites where is served as president in 2023 and 2024, serves on the Vernal Area Chamber of Commerce Board, is an RLF Board Member for the Uintah Basin Association of Governments, and sits on the Board of the Intermountain Natural History Association. He also contributes his time serving on the Business Development Committee. In addition, Pete supports youth sports as a Vernal Girls Softball Board Member and has coached girls’ softball for many years as well as other sports his kids are involved with.

Pete is an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He is married to his best friend wife Kati Labrum Morphy, and together they have four beautiful daughters, who keep them busy and grateful. Their oldest daughter is 16 and the youngest is 8.

When he’s not working or volunteering, Pete enjoys chasing his daughters to their many activities, boating, fishing, coaching, cooking great food, and spending quality time with family.

Kim Jones - Crimson Oak Financial Management

Harold Kim Jones was born here in Vernal, UT many years ago. His parents are Red and Petra Jones who built Arby’s when they moved back to Vernal in 1986. He is married to a Texan, Colleen Patricia Townson, and they are the parents of three children and 3 grandchildren.

Kim opened his successful surgical and wound care specialized practice here in Vernal in 1992. He served patients for 20 years from all over the country, with 4 offices including Duchesne, Roosevelt, IHS, and his main office in Vernal. He served in several leadership positions at ARMC, as well as the Utah Podiatric Medical Assoc. for many years. He taught many seminars in the basin regarding diabetes, foot health, wound care, and sports medicine. He sold his practice at the height of his career in 2011.

Kim and Colleen have served in 4-H capacities with horses, and cattle. They raise longhorn cattle and sponsored a long horn show here during the county fair years ago. They even had a steer broke to ride in the parades for a few years. Kim played on city league basketball, volleyball, and softball teams. He has played guitar with several members in the community in a club.

They have served in the Republican party locally and the state central committee for several years. They have served on several boards including Friends of Ashley Valley, and Uintah Schools foundation. They have supported the arts, including UBOC, and Ora Faye’s academy of music. They helped plan and manage the Dinosaur Triathlon for several years. Kim made the coprolite trophies for the contestants. He served on the Dinah-Mites for many years as well.

Kim volunteered about 20 years ago to teach anatomy, physiology, and microbiology at the Vernal USU campus. He has served in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day saints in many capacities.

Kim and Colleen together have donated time and money to the community over the 34 years they have been in the Basin through various charities and organizations.They have served in highway clean ups and community improvement plans. They helped coach soccer, basketball, baseball, and flag football teams with their children. Kim supported Colleen with her education, and she eventually became the first PHD to be awarded in Ecology in the Basin at our local campus.

Kim loves to spend time at the lakes here in the Basin water skiing, and surfing with friends and family. He is usually the first one on the water after the ice melts, and one of the last to winterize his boat. He also has had an art show at the Sandau Art Studio showing off his hobby of intarsia woodworking (surgical skills).

Kim continues to serve in the community. After he sold his practice at age 47, he started a whole new career as one of the few certified financial planners in the Basin. He teaches individuals, families, groups, community members, county employees and private businesses how money works. He teaches financial literacy, financial wealth and independence.

Kim is driven to help people escape the nightmare of living paycheck to paycheck. He loves helping people learn how money works. He takes the time to teach people to dream, and then works to develop solid, simple savings plans to help individuals achieve their dreams of financial happiness and independence.

March 2025 Business of the Month Wingers

Coming from a background of construction and real estate, Eric Gunter has been involved in the restaurant Industry for almost 20 years. Working for companies such as Cracker Barrel, Brick Oven Pizza and Pasta, he has been with Wingers for 12 years.

Wingers Restaurant and Alehouse have been a staple in the Basin for Over 20 years. In March 2013, Eric took over operations as General Manager of the 2500sq ft diner style restaurant, where over 4 years Eric and his team grew sales and rebuilt the community’s faith in the concept.

In late 2017 it became clear that to continue to grow and provide the Basin with the best experience, Wingers needed a new look and new location. In August 2018 they opened their new 5300 sq foot concept with a new look and vibe. The Wingers’ mission is to create amazing experiences every day for each guest they serve.

Wingers are heavily involved in youth hockey and a title sponsor of the Vernal Oilers. Wingers also contribute to and supports, High School Sports, The Lane Frost Challenge, Holly Days, Golf Events, and many other local events, and activities.

Thanks to the Basin, we continue to be the most successful, by all metrics in the Wingers System.

Mark Foley is a longtime community member. He graduated from Uintah High School then served for two years in the Dallas, Texas Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served for a number of years on the board and executive committee of the Vernal area Chamber of Commerce and was the President from 1991 to 1992.

Mark is one of the founding board members of the Vernal Chamber Foundation. Currently serving as the president of the Foundation.

Mark has been involved in the local Republican Party and served as the Vice Chairman and Chairman. His service to the community includes serving on the board of the Ashley Regional Medical Center for many years where he currently serves as Vice President of the Board. Mark is an Eagle Scout and has served in multiple capacities over the years with Boy Scouts.

In addition to community service, Mark has served in his church working with both youth and adults including many leadership roles and service as Bishop.

Mark and his wife Judy own and operate Neighborhood Cleaners where they have supported trees for charity for many years and Vernal Rotary Club with their annual coats for kids project.

Mark is the father of two sons Dallen and Greg and grandfather to five of the best ever grand kids.

In October 2024 Mark received a new esophagus at the Huntsman Medical Center in Salt Lake City. This has given him a second chance on life, and Mark is looking forward to enjoying time with his family.

Mark says, “I’m grateful to live in a community like Vernal where we are surrounded by kind and compassionate people.”

White Smiles Pediatric Dentistry - January 2025 Business of the Month

White Smiles Pediatric Dentistry has been serving the families of the Uintah Basin for 15 years. Why should you choose a pediatric dentist? They spend an additional two years in specialty training beyond dental school focusing solely on the oral healthcare needs of children and those with special needs. Dr. Travis White and Dr. Kolby Lance are Diplomates of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and have passed a series of rigorous exams to become board-certified pediatric dental specialists.

Dr. White was born and raised in Roosevelt. He founded White Smiles in 2009 after seeing the need for a children’s dental specialist in the Basin. He and his wife Alicia have three children, Kiara, Kenton, and Mckenzie, and they absolutely love living in Vernal among family and friends. One of the most rewarding things about practicing in the Basin has been the ability to reestablish relationships within the community. Travis completed his dental training at the University of Kentucky and then continued his training in the specialty of pediatric dentistry at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. He enjoys spending time outdoors, mountain biking and attending sporting events with his kids (Mckenzie currently is a multi-sport collegiate athlete).

Dr. Kolby Lance joined Dr. White almost six years ago, and they are 50-50 partners in the practice. He was born and raised in Vernal. Kolby and his wife Tara, a dental hygienist, along with their four children, Noah, Sloan, Rowan, and Lottie were excited to have the opportunity to move back to the Basin to join the kid-focused team at White Smiles. After graduating from Brigham Young University, Dr. Lance completed his dental training at the Missouri School of Dentistry and Oral Health. He then continued his training in the specialty of pediatric dentistry at NYU Langone Hospitals. When they aren't doing dentistry, you can find the Lances cheering for their son Noah at Uintah High, camping and four wheeling on the mountain, or watching Utah Jazz games.

Dr. White and Dr. Lance believe that great smiles start early. At White Smiles Pediatric Dentistry, their goal is to make your child’s dental experience as positive as possible and alleviate dental fears. The friendly caring staff and kid-friendly environment make dentistry fun and exciting. Everything about their beautiful new facility was designed to make children love the dentist! White Smiles offers many treatment options including sedation for children with many cavities or who are extremely anxious. They even have dental lasers and can fix some cavities without those dreaded shots!

Dr. White and Dr. Lance accept many insurances and even have an in-house savings program for those without insurance. They are proud to serve disadvantaged children by accepting Medicaid. Often, extremely young children come to the office with severe early childhood cavities. We’re talking children two to five years old with 5, 10, and even 20 cavities often accompanied by severe pain and facial swelling. Dr. White and Dr. Lance have long-standing privileges at Ashley Regional Medical Center and Uintah Basin Medical Center where they complete hundreds of oral rehabilitation cases each year for children in the Basin. Both doctors are grateful to be raising their families and providing kid-focused dental care in the community they grew up in and love.

We would also like to present both Whites Smiles and Revive Skin Care & Laser with a beautification award for their renovation of their new location. They took a worn out building and, with a lot of hard work, turned it into a beautiful facility both inside and out. As shown in the pictures, it looks truly amazing! G&H Garbage Service – A Legacy of Hard Work and Community Commitment

This December, G&H Garbage Service, a family-run business with deep roots in Vernal and the Uintah Basin, is honored to be recognized as the Vernal Area Chamber of Commerce’s Business of the Month . From humble beginnings to a thriving operation, G&H embodies the values of hard work, innovation, and a commitment to the community.

A Humble Start, Rooted in Ingenuity

G&H Garbage Service began in the 1960s as a modest side hustle for Jack Chivers, who was then working full-time at the Gilsonite mine in Bonanza. He acquired the tiny Neola-based business from his brother-in-law Garth and his partner Howard after they chose to focus on other endeavors. Jack never bothered changing the name from G&H, and often quipped that there was never a need, because the name was usually alphabetically first to be found in the yellow pages over local competitors. Why mess with a good thing?

On weekends, Jack and his family, along with a few friends, would make their rounds, emptying backyard burn barrels into the back of a one-ton pickup. Serving about 100 households in Vernal, this hands-on service became a staple for local residents.

Innovation was always at the heart of Jack’s efforts. Five years into the business, he and a coworker at the mine designed and built G&H’s first rear-load garbage truck. This ingenuity laid the foundation for the company’s expansion. By 1978, after winning the Vernal City contract bid, Jack invested in G&H’s first commercial garbage truck—a pivotal moment that propelled the business to new heights.

Growth and Generational Success

Since its incorporation in 1968, G&H Garbage Service has grown into a cornerstone of waste management in the Uintah Basin. Today, Jack and his wife Ileen’s legacy lives on through their family, including son Dave and grandsons Matt and Mark, who manage the company’s day-to-day operations.

What began with a single truck now includes a fleet of 11 route trucks, five roll-off trucks, two vac trucks, and two hydraulic flatbeds. Handling nearly a million pounds of garbage each month, G&H’s operation today hauls in a single day what it once collected in an entire year. The company has also expanded its services to include porta-potty rentals, self-storage, and industrial and oilfield waste management, ensuring its role as an essential service provider in the community.

A Passion for Ranching

G&H Garbage Service’s success cannot be separated from the family’s other passion, and perhaps the driving force behind it all—ranching. Alongside his dedication to G&H, Jack fostered a love of cattle ranching that endures within the family. What started with a few broken-mouthed sale barn cows in the backyard of their Maeser home has blossomed into Chivers Ranch, a thriving operation with 1,200 mother cows, 60 bulls, and 5,000 acres of deeded land stretching across Diamond Mountain, Vernal, and Jensen.

Community First

The Chivers family’s contributions to the Uintah Basin extend far beyond business. Their dedication to hard work, honesty, and family values has made them longstanding supporters of community initiatives. Whether serving in the Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo, donating services to local events, or volunteering in church and government roles, the Chivers family has consistently given back to the wonderful community that supports them.

A Legacy Worth Celebrating

Jack Chivers’ vision and Ileen’s steadfast support created more than a successful business—they established a legacy of resilience, ingenuity, and service. Their ability to see “the treasure in another man’s trash” has provided a strong future for their posterity and contributed to the strength of our local economy.

Dr. Todd and Dr. Bill value education and are actively engaged in continuing education each year. They take the team with them to learning seminars in Salt Lake City, Arizonia, and Florida. They do team retreats such as snowmobiling at Daniels Summit Lodge, and going to Lagoon, Cabo and Cancun Mexico.

Always reaching beyond themselves Wright Orthodontics is always involved in activities in the Community. They are popular with High School and Middle School students who often come to career shadow or do internships with the doctors. They are caught building floats for parades, handing our snow cones at school tailgates, end of Summer Passport parties, biding on Trees for Charity and sponsoring many students, teams, and educators. Along with their Dental colleagues the Wright brothers have sponsored their own Charity Bowling, Golf, or Cornhole tournaments that raise thousands of dollars going to Utah Special Olympics, Uintah and Roosevelt Food Pantries, Rapha House for child trafficking, and so much more.

As we celebrate this milestone, we will reflect on the deep gratitude we feel for being welcomed into the Uintah Basin community. The support and acceptance we have received from our patients and their families have been instrumental in allowing us to practice and grow in the wonderful area.

Quarterly Outstanding Public Service Award: Jeremy Raymond

Jeremy Raymond is the Executive Director of the Uintah Fire Suppression Special Service District in Uintah County. He has been the Director for 19 years and prior to joining the District he was the Fire Marshal and Emergency Manager for Uintah County. Some of his responsibilities include fire inspections, fire investigations, hazardous materials response, airport fire and rescue, and managing and directing the fire district. He is also a paramedic and runs part time for Gold Cross Ambulance in Vernal.

Jeremy's passion is public safety. He spends many hours assisting and training first responders throughout the county. He also travels around the state of Utah training and testing volunteer fire departments for The Utah Fire and Rescue Academy. He actively participates in the community serving on committees and volunteering. He enjoys educating the public through trainings and advertising.

Jeremy holds two associate degrees from Utah Valley University as well as many certifications including: Structural firefighter 1&2, Hazmat Technician, Rope Rescue Technician, Fire Inspector, Fire Investigator, and Airport Rescue Firefighter. He has served as a committee member and also chair of the State of Utah 9-1-1 Committee. He is currently a council member on the Certification Council with the Utah Fire and Rescue Academy.

In 2023 Jeremy was awarded the Distinguished Manager Award by the Utah Association of Special Districts. He has also received the Kevin Orr Memorial Award for dedication and devotion to the citizens of the Uintah Basin.

Jeremy is an Eagle Scout and spent two years as a full-time Spanish-speaking missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the California Carlsbad Mission. He devotes time to serving in his church callings, including over 12 years working with the young men. He is the son of Mark and MaryAnn Raymond. He lives in Vernal with his wife, Lynelle, and four kids: Kayloni, Hyrum, Jakob, and Savannah. In his spare time Jeremy loves to go fishing, hiking, boating, and spending time with his family.

Keith Foley purchased the Sears Catalog Store in 1983 and was located at 1218 West Hwy 40 here in Vernal for 8 years. In 1991 Keith built the current building and ran Sears until March 1993 when Sears closed all the catalog stores.

Keith then decided to open a new appliance store to serve Vernal and the surrounding areas called Basin Appliance. This business was a family run business as the 4 Foley children grew up working in the business. At that time, they were selling great appliance brands like Maytag, Admiral & Jenn Air. The business evolved in 1994 into Basin Appliance & Floorcoverings. As the business branched out, so did the building to be able to offer more space for retail and warehouse space.

In 2015 Keith & Al Jean Foley sold the business to their sons Carl & Corey, both of whom have spent most of their lives in the industry.

With new owners, the store again changed and has branched out into many various home furnishing items and services such as: additional appliance brands, appliance service, and repair, all types of flooring and carpet, window coverings, cabinets built locally by Udell’s Custom Cabinets, countertops, seamless rain gutter, and carpet cleaning called Extreme Carpet Cleaning.

Basin Appliance’s continued involvement in our community is evident in its continued support of many community events and organizations such as Thompson House of Hope for Men, The Vernal Hotel Haunt, the Annual Car Show, and many sports and school activities. Cory also serves on the Vernal City Council.

As things have changed over the years one thing that remains the same is their commitment to customer satisfaction and quality products.

Years ago, there was a jingle that accompanied our radio ads, ……” bringin' it all together…. That is what we do best!!”

This year we are embarking on our 31st Anniversary and invite you to come join us for a free BBQ on April 26th here at our showroom.

Quarterly Outstanding Public Service Award: Louise Thompson

Local business owner Louise Thompson has been actively involved in the community serving on multiple boards and charity organizations in Uintah Basin. She is also a member of charity organizations such as The Vernal Rotary Club where she served as the president for one year, and multiple years on the board. During her years as a Rotarian she has helped in several areas such as Santas Community Effort providing Christmas for around 800 kids annually. She helped create and oversee the Shop Local campaign that helped several small businesses survive through the Covid Pandemic. She is also one of the founding members of the Vernal Elevated Civil Group. This group plans to help Uintah county by hosting several fundraising events and they expect to see some really great results with this new club's efforts. There are several more programs that she commits a great deal of time and effort helping or working as an organizing member.

She is also an active member of the Dinahmite’s organization serving the community. You will see them at almost every local event wearing the Blue blazers assisting and directing events. They also come together to welcome any new business to the Chamber of Commerce for a ribbon cutting. She along with the others love to help anybody in business feel welcomed by the community. Other County duties include being a Board member for the Community Services & Food Pantry Advisory Board and a member of the Local Homeless Council through UBAOG.

Louise is an owner of several local businesses such as Basin Flood and Fire, Buddy Storage, and Bublen Drinks & Treats. These businesses contribute to local sports teams, The Uintah County Sheriffs Association, Trees for Charity, several benefit golf tournaments, and really more than can be listed. She is also active in the Vernal Chamber of Commerce, LEPC, RBA (Roosevelt Business Alliance), Duchesne County Chamber of Commerce, Women Business Owners of the Basin, and Women in business Duchesne County.

Through her efforts only one word can describe her and that is OUTSTANDING. We are very fortunate to have her and appreciate all that she does for our Community. All of your time and effort does not go unnoticed and we all feel that there is no one more deserving of this award. Thank you for all that you do and the example that you set.

Les grew up in Gusher, graduating from Union High School in 1986. Monica grew up in Upalco, graduating from Altamont High School in 1987. They were married in June,1988.

Les and Monica reside in Jensen, where they have lived for 26 years. They are the parents of 4 children and have been blessed with 16 grand kids, one more being added soon. Family is everything to them.

They own and operate Outlaw Trail RV Park and love working with the cattle and land on their Hidden Acres Farm with their Family.

Monica has worked on the family farm most of her life, working with her Dad and siblings. She is excited to continue the farming tradition, to preserve their Family Legacy and way of life. She has also worked as a waitress and at our local IFA. She owned and operated a café in Altamont and a convenience store/cafe in Jensen. Her biggest accomplishment is being a Mom and a Cancer survivor of 27 years.

Les has worked in the oil and gas industry for over 30 years, fifteen of those years were spent in management positions. He has been a Production Foreman, a consultant and was the District Manager for Petroglyph Operating.

They love being outdoors, enjoy fishing, camping, farming, and mostly spending time with their family. They believe in good old fashioned hard work and the “old school” way of life and have a great passion for helping others when and where possible.

Les and Monica have been involved in numerous community activities. Some of which are: The Jensen Pumpkin Festival, Hospitality Committee, the Chamber Legislative Committee, the Uintah County GOP committee, members of the Utah Citizens for the Constitution and Community Action Group and serving on the cemetery board for Jensen and Gusher Cemeteries. They have volunteered to help with several other community events including Vernal Holly Days and Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo.

Les and Monica say they love to contribute to our community and feel very Blessed to be part of the Uintah Basin. We are very grateful to be Americans and are proud of our Heritage.

Brian and Amy Gorum moved to Vernal in April 2000 without knowing anyone in the state - they were just looking for an opportunity.

While Amy taught school, Brian began his agency career. Brian wholeheartedly believes in State Farm's motto – “Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there”. Brian also believes in giving back to the community that supports you.

As a small business owner, Brian started with the Chamber of Commerce - He was President of the Chamber from 2006/2007 and was awarded the Citizen of the Year in 2005. He continues to be on the Legislative Committee and a member of the Dinah-Mites.

Brian is a Mason & Shriner - he was named Utah Shriner of the Year in 2015.

Brian recently retired from the Uintah Fire District where he was chairman of the Fire District board for 14 of his 15 years on the board.

Brian is an active member of the Vernal Rotary Club and has held several state offices. He has gone on seven humanitarian missions to Central and South America.

In 2022, State Farm's 100th anniversary, Brian was recognized as one of the top one hundred agents (out of 20,000 agents) for his leadership and community service.

Brian met President Ronald Reagan in 1979 and has been a staunch Republican to this day. He has been a state or county delegate for the last 24 years and served two terms as Uintah County Republican party chair. He ran unsuccessfully as District 26 State Senate in 2018. Even without a win, it was one the best experiences of his life!

With all the committees, clubs, and meetings - the most fun Brian has is reading with school kids and being a coach with the Special Olympics.

Pure Bliss Day Spa offers massage therapy services with multiple massage therapists under one roof.

Stephanie first started her career with a private practice out of her home when she was 19 years old. She had a dream of just one space with multiple massage therapists working together, while still having the freedom to offer different specialties and making their own schedules.

Stephanie’s dream became a reality shortly after her marriage to Garth. They officially started Pure Bliss Day Spa on November 1, 2015. Eight years later, they have grown and grown and are still going strong. They currently have seven active massage therapists, with 5 treatment rooms, including a large couple’s room to offer couples massages. Massages are by appointment only, Monday through Saturday.

The staff at Pure Bliss also enjoy participating in various community events where they offer chair massages to the public. Every Christmas Pure Bliss picks some families to sponsor as well as donating numerous gift certificates to raffles and sports organizations throughout the year.

Todd Massey is a lifelong resident of the Uintah Basin and has worked as a Plant Operations Manager for 43 + years in the telecommunications Industry where he has focused on controlling costs, eliminating overages, and enhancing efficiency, increasing productivity, safety, and quality. He has been the Plant Operations Manager for Strata Networks since 2001.

Todd brought BMX racing to the Uintah Basin as the owner of Basin Cycle and the Basin BMX Raceway where they awarded nearly 100 trophies each weekend.

His drive to provide community service began many years ago and continues today as he currently serves as the Vernal Area Chamber of Commerce Board President, is a Uintah School District board member, Utah Cable & Telecom Association board member, and is a member of the Uintah County Economic Opportunity Advisory Board and the Dinah-Mites.

Todd’s children and grandchildren were heavily involved in local sports, and he participated right alongside them by being a coach for Baseball, Football, Wrestling, Softball, Soccer, and 7 ^th and 8 grade Boys’ Basketball. As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints he has serviced in many callings including Scout Master, Young men’s advisor, Stake Mission President, High Councilor, Bishop, and now serving with his wife as a Primary Teacher.

Dinosaur Inn and Suites

Dinosaur Inn & Suites is a locally owned family run business in Vernal.

Originally, in 1929, the owners of the property had cabins built so that travelers coming through the area could have a place to stay. Eventually, those cabins were torn down by the owners and the current buildings that sit on the property now were added through the years.

After being run by the same family for three generations, the historic property unfortunately closed in 2016. The appeal of bringing this piece of history back to life and sharing all the amazing things there are to do in the area with travelers from all over the world encouraged Cody, who had worked in the oilfield for 17 years and wanted to be able to be home with his family more, to make a career change. Cody and Shalene Bullock, long time Vernal residents, decided to quit their jobs, buy, and reopen the property in October 2017.

Shalene’s grandfather had been the head maintenance man for many years at the property and Shalene’s grandmother was the head housekeeper for many years. As a family run business, you will see Cody and Shalene’s children working right alongside them every day.

Cody and Shalene grew up in Vernal and love the community and its people. There is no other place in the world they would rather live and they are committed to helping better the community they live and play in. Dinosaur Inn & Suites sponsors, to name a few, Vernal Rodeo, Vernal Hotel Haunt, Dinah Balloon Festival, Kiwanis Club, Uintah Basin Stock Show, Holly Days, Uintah Theater, Tournament of Champions, and Marvelous Xtreme Bull Madness (Colby Lofthouse memorial scholarship). After owning TC Landscaping since 1984, The Crow family opened Outback Rentals in April 2004. What started out with only a few items of equipment, has grown into a multi-service business.

Outback rents commercial-sized equipment down to small yard work equipment including trailers, dump trailers, trailer-mounted pressure washers, light towers, generators, loaders, excavators, skid steers, heaters, and more. They offer full-service maintenance and repairs and a parts department serving everyone in the basin from residential to oilfield.

Larry Peterson purchased Basin Rentals in 1984 from Norman Kitchen. It was located on Hwy 40 where Fossil RV is now. His son Craig Peterson started working with his dad Larry when he was 18 years old. They moved to a new location where Basin Appliance is located and was there until the late 80s when they moved to the location they are now on North Vernal Ave. In 2000 Craig and Cary purchased the business from their dad giving him the opportunity to retire. Since purchasing the business Cary's son has also joined the team making 3 generations of Peterson's. They have also added 3 more employees.

Basin Rentals is proud to support the community and participate in many improvement projects such as donating equipment to paint the helicopter on Main Street, supplying equipment to the High School for football games, sponsoring many kids in sports, and Sub for Santa projects.

Carson Young

Carson's involvement with Vernal’s Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo began as a 6-year-old in the Mutton Busting and continued as a teenager by assisting the judges during the rough stock events and barrel racing. Carson joined the rodeo committee and board of directors in 2016 as the Treasurer and continues to serve in this role, in addition to serving as Vice President.

Carson is a nearly life-long resident of Uintah County and a graduate of Uintah High School. While in High school, he competed as a bull rider in Utah High School Rodeo and was the Mathematics Sterling Scholar. Carson attended Utah State University in Logan, Utah, and competed on USU's college rodeo team for one year. After serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salvador, Brazil, Carson's bull riding career was cut short after breaking a vertebra in his back two weeks after returning home.

Shortly after Carson's bull riding injury, Carson met his beautiful wife, Malynne Chamberlain, and they have been married for over 13 years. They are the parents of six beautiful daughters, and a baby boy will be joining the family in October.

Carson returned to USU and earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in accounting. While at Utah State, Carson served as a Quigley Ambassador to promote the School of Accountancy, and as the Vice President of Beta Alpha Psi, an international honor society for accounting students. During this time, he participated in various service projects, including the volunteer income tax assistance program.

Immediately after obtaining his master’s degree, he began working for KPMG, a large international accounting firm in Salt Lake City. Carson and his family returned to Vernal 10 years ago this month to work for a local accounting firm where he became licensed as a Certified Public Accountant. Carson has been part of the BHI team since 2015 and currently works as the Director of Corporate Finance.

Carson is very active in the community, through the rodeo committee, church, and other organizations. The rodeo committee supports Uintah County Search and Rescue, the Basin Junior Rodeo Association, Trees for Charity, Holly Days, Dinosaurland Freedom Festival, and many other charities. Also, he has served multiple times as a county and state delegate in the political process.

Quarterly Outstanding Public Service Award: Lesha Coltharp

Lesha Coltharp is the Director of Tourism for Uintah County. Telling people about Dinosaurland and all the awesome things to see and do in the Vernal area is her passion! Lesha earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Utah State University in Business Information Systems and Marketing. She was born and raised in Uintah County and has worked in the hospitality industry since the age of 12. She loves tourism and marketing! This job combines both of those as well as event management and truly is a dream job! She wakes up every day excited to promote the Vernal area and help grow the economy in the Uintah Basin.

Lesha serves on many local and state-wide boards to help grow the tourism economy in Uintah County and the State of Utah: Utah Tourism Industry Association, Utah State Parks Board, the Utah Office of Tourism Board of Directors, Downtown Revitalization committee, Chair of the Uintah High Grad Night Committee and Uintah High School Community Council, Hotel Vernal Haunt, Uintah County Fair and several local event committees.

Lesha is responsible for the Utah Coop Marketing grant for Uintah County Tourism that brings in over $175,000 each year to help market Uintah County to out of state tourists. Lesha also works on grants for the Utah Outdoor Recreation grant that helps improve recreation infrastructure in the area with projects totaling over a million dollars to date. Lesha also manages the Utah Welcome Center in Jensen, co manages Buckskin Hills Recreation Complex, and has the BEST staff ever in the Uintah County Tourism Office. Without Bridget, Mike, Madi and all the interns over the years, none of the accomplishments would be possible.

Visit Dinosaurland, The Origin of Adventure with Vern & Al, and the This is Vernal brand have both been created under the direction of Lesha. Dinah SOAR Days, Dinosaurland Passport to Summer, Red Fleet Paddlefest, Uintah County Summer Day Trips, JWP River Festival, Outlaw ATV Jamboree and other local events and festivals have been created by or under the leadership of Lesha.

Many of the events, committees and time spent serving in the community are volunteer hours that Lesha and her family enjoy serving to help make our community a great place to live, work and play! It’s a team effort and all hands-on deck most of the time. Lesha says that this award is not only for her, but also for husband and kids. Over the last 15 years they have given up holiday’s, weekends, birthdays and free time to serve along side her. They are proud to be from Uintah County and grateful for the opportunity to serve and live in such a beautiful and giving community.

Quarterly Outstanding Public Service Award: Tabitha Wilson

Sean and Caleb Wilson have an amazing mother, one who considers them the most important people in the universe and describes them as “her whole world”. We know this exceptional individual as Tabitha Wilson. Tabitha originally hails from Arizona, where she began her career in the financial industry in 2007 with Arizona State Credit Union. During her 5 years there, she found an interest in community involvement, becoming an Ambassador for the Queen Creek Chamber of Commerce. Her regular involvement in weekly events helped solidify her passion for community work. In 2012, Tabitha moved to St. George, Utah, and went to work for Mountain America Credit Union. This led her to Vernal in 2014, where she was promoted to Branch Manager in 2016. This is when her involvement in the Vernal Area Chamber of Commerce began, including as a member of the Hospitality Committee, and the Public Relations Committee. Tabitha has been a member of the Dinah-Mites, Ambassadors for the Chamber, since 2016 and has served as Vice President and President. In 2020 Tabitha was elected to the board of directors for the Chamber of Commerce. Tabitha has also served on the Terra Academy School board for two years.

Tabitha can often be found volunteering at various community events such as the Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo, the Esquire RV Show, serving breakfast at the ATV Jamboree, collecting food for the local food pantry, cooking at the Ronald McDonald House, and cooking food for various charity golf tournaments. Each year Tabitha provides community service during September with the MACU Cares focus. In past years she has done trash cleanup, painted the BTA bus benches, volunteered her time with the seniors at the Care Center, put together Back to School backpacks, among others. One of Tabitha’s favorite volunteer experiences has been over the last 5 years helping with Hotel Vernal Haunt in various capacities. She loves creating an awesome experience for the guests and helping scare the charity out of them.

At Mountain America, Tabitha has worked to help the community by leading her team to proactively refinance millions of dollars of loans per year, something appropriately called “rescued loans” at MACU, putting over two thousand individuals and families in the Vernal area into better financial circumstances. Her branch has reached record levels over prior years several times under her leadership. Tabitha also has been recognized as an early adopter within her company, being among the first branch managers to complete her Coaching Certificate when the Inside-Out program was rolled out to the company.

Tabitha has also served in various callings through her church such as teaching Primary, Cub Scouts leader, and for the past 2 years as Young Women’s President. She loves spending her time with the Youth in helping them grow into amazing leaders themselves.

Tabitha loves the Vernal Area and from day one, she felt welcomed into the community. She loves spending time outdoors camping, hiking, shooting, fishing and kayaking with family, friends, and of course her two sons. When she can’t be outside, she enjoys reading, puzzles, escape rooms, board and card games, cooking, and baking. Tabitha is passionate about serving and helping others, whether that be through her work with Mountain America in helping members improve their financial situation or through serving her family, friends, team at work, or in serving those in her community.

Business of the Month February 2023 : Esquire RV

In March of 1973 Gene and Lynell Anfinson moved to Vernal to assist Lynell's parents, Virgil and Genita Hatch, in constructing Esquire Estates mobile home park. The following Spring of 1974, a visit to Jet Manufacturing in Salt Lake City inspired the founding of Esquire RV.

It all started with five Jet travel trailers lined up on the Esquire Estates frontage road adjacent to West Highway 40 (across from the Vernal Cinemas). The shop was a 30-by-30-foot block building located at the south end of the mobile home park. Within a couple of years, they expanded their inventory and moved an old one-room cabin to the front lot to be used as the sales office. In the early 1990s, the building received an attractive rock face-lift on the exterior, and a remodeled store and office. One night in 1998 there was a propane explosion and fire that destroyed the entire building, but miraculously, the files were saved so business could continue. After the fire they used a travel trailer as an office. Neighbors from other businesses in town helped with the fire cleanup by providing food and the tools needed. The overwhelming outpouring of love and support will never be forgotten.

In February of 1999 Esquire held its first-annual RV Show and Sale. The original thought behind the show and sale was to sell all the parts from the store that were still useable but had burn marks or smoke damage. They also decided to promote the trailers and add them to the arena. This show ended up being a huge hit, as they sold several trailers and most of the fire-damaged products. Because of that show in 1999, you will find Esquire RV at Vernal's Western Park Indoor Arena the last weekend of February each year.

A new 6,000-square-foot building, "Camp-A-Lot," and a separate 4,000-square-foot shop were completed in 1999. In 2001, Gene and Lynell Anfinson sold their share of the partnership to Danny and Peggy Moore. Shortly after the partnership sale, Kiley Moore (Danny and Peggy’s son) started working for them in 2002. In 2012 Brandt Emery joined the ranks and on January 1, 2021, they purchased the business from Danny and Peggy. Today, they have 24 employees and boast one of the largest parts inventories anywhere, with over 90 units in inventory.

“For us the important thing has always been focusing on the people,” said Brandt. “We don’t let the bottom line or dollar amounts distract us from making sure that our customers and our employees come first. Always.” He also shared that the best part of being part of a long-time local business is seeing the progress and growth of his employees and helping them be set up for success in their lives at whatever they choose to do. A close second: seeing the joy on someone's face as they pick up their new trailer and hit the road for the first time.

Esquire RV has been so blessed with amazing support from the community, so, they do what they can to give back and support many local events and charities. They support Uintah Basin Orchestra and Chorus where Brandt serves as the chairman. They support the Velociraptor biking team, Rocky Mountain Elks Foundation, Utah Mule Deer Foundation, National Rifle Assoc., local charity golf tournaments like Strata and USU, high school sports and music programs, local events such as Basin Revival, several charities of local churches including Latter Day Saint and other Christian denominations. It seems whenever there is an event or good cause, Esquire RV is contributing in some way.

Quarterly Outstanding Public Service Award: Joel Brown

Joel Brown was born in Provo, Utah. When he was 3 years old his family moved to Chicago and when he was six years old, they moved to Mesa, Arizona. While he was on a church mission to Ireland his family moved to St. George, Utah where he attended Dixie College upon returning. He has lived in the Uintah Basin since 2008. He loves Vernal and is passionate about the many wonderful places and things to do that the area has to offer.

Active in the community and the Chamber of Commerce, Joel serves on several committees including Conservation Committee, Holly Days, Trees for Charity, Downtown Alliance, Business Development, and the Hotel Vernal Haunt where he oversees the security at the Haunt. He is on the Charitable Friends of Ashley Valley Board of Directors. Active in his church, he has served in many capacities including counselor in the Bishopric. He loves to be involved and serve where he can make a difference. He is a firm believer that when the tide rises, all ships rise with it.

Joel is also the Co-Founder along with Bruce Tippets, of Dreams in Motion. Founded in 2020, Dreams in Motion is a 501(c)3 Non-Profit that focuses on people who have gone through life altering experiences, whether that be a kidney transplant, heart surgery, cancer or any other hard experience and have been able to overcome their challenges. Dreams in Motion provides these individuals with a first-class experience at a college or professional sporting event. Their most recent Hero that they have recognized was Justin Mamea, a Senior at Uintah High School. He has been dealing with two forms of Leukemia. Dreams in Motion was able to get Justin, his father and his uncles to the Utah Football game, where Utah knocked off Number 7 USC. They provided hotel accommodations and 4 tickets to the game.

When Joel is not volunteering or working, you will find him up on the mountain ice fishing, camping, or exploring the great outdoors. He loves spending time with his wife Missy and their 3 boys.

Quarterly Outstanding Public Service Award: Jared Jackson

Jared Jackson is the Mine Manager for the Simplot Vernal Phosphate Mine. He started working for Simplot in 2008 and has been the Vernal Mine Manager since 2018.

Jared also started serving on the Chamber Board in 2018 and has been a Board member for 4 years, and the Chamber President for about 15 months. Jared enjoys partnering with the Chamber and appreciates how the Chamber supports businesses in the area and helps them know how they can best support and serve the community. Jared serves on the Founders Board for the Center for Entrepreneurship at USU Uintah Basin, and is a Board member and Vice President of the Utah Mining Association.

One of the aspects of being the Mine Manager for Simplot that Jared enjoys the most, is being able to represent Simplot while serving the community. Simplot donates to events and fundraisers throughout the year, but some of Jared’s favorites include:
Cooking fries and handing them out to everyone at Holly Days (around 3,000 - 4,000 pounds of French fries!) Bidding on trees at the Trees for Charity fundraiser Allowing employees to buy Simplot food products and then donating that money to Charitable Friends of Ashley Valley and United Way (Simplot also matches the money raised from employees) Sponsoring the Uintah High School Track Team to travel to the Simplot Games and then volunteering at the Simplot Games Working with all the great schools in the area from USU and UBTech, to interviewing Sterling Scholars at the high school, to giving mining presentations to 4th graders Boosting earnings for the kids at the Junior Livestock Show and supporting FFA
Jared feels very fortunate to live and work in the Uintah Basin and appreciates how well the community supports Simplot and all the other great businesses in our area.

Sorensen Design & Construction, founded by Wes Sorensen in 2011, is a general contracting company that specializes in design and construction. With many years of experience in the construction industry, Wes Sorensen was inspired to create a business that would bring a new edge to the industry and make each project a memorable experience.

The goal for Wes and his team is to bring their client's vision to reality from inception to completion. Growing annually year after year, the team has successfully designed and contracted over 200 projects while serving Utah, Arizona, Colorado, Wyoming, and North Dakota. By using a knowledgeable and experienced network of local subcontractors and suppliers as well as key in-house employees, they are able to continuously serve the needs of construction.

Evans Family Media is a locally owned and operated media company comprising of 3 heritage local radio stations: Eagle Country 105.5 KLCY, Newstalk KVEL, and 98.5 The Fox and additionally, BasinNow.com, your hometown online newspaper.

“Providing the public with content relevant to our community is a key factor of our success”, shares company president, Steve Evans. “We strive to be active in as many aspects of the community as feasibly possible”. Evans Family Media hosts and presents a variety of community events including numerous concerts and trade shows like the annual Home and Garden Show and Women’s Day Out. The company uses the collective influence of all four media platforms to promote civic events, contests and interactive promotions.

Evans Family Media began in 1984 with the purchase of KNEU radio station in Roosevelt by Joe and Teddie Evans. Business of the Month November 2022: Wendy's

Wendy’s was built in 1993 by a group of Vernal businessman, one of whom had a relative in the business who said Vernal would be a great fit for a Wendy’s.

Wendy’s in Vernal opened on July 10, 1993 during the Dinosaur Round-up Rodeo. The community had highly anticipated the opening and the sidewalks were lined with customers waiting to enter. We will be celebrating our 30th birthday, July 2023 and can honestly say we have enjoyed every minute.

The best part of the business is the community in which we serve and the opportunity we have to help people grow and succeed. We are involved in the community via Charitable Friends of Ashley Valley where we enjoy partaking in Dino-Soar days, Hotel Haunt, Freedom Fest, and many other community involved activities. The Dinosaur Round-up Rodeo is very close to our heart and we actively participate in this event in many capacities every year. We love being involved with many of our local schools including Davis & Maeser Elementary schools, Terra Academy, and Uintah High School. We support our Bus Drivers and many other small activities in the area.

We feel as a business, our most important role in our community is to help make it better. We enjoy hiring individuals to learn skills and responsibilities and provide them footing for life’s opportunities. It’s always a pleasure to have children and grandchildren from previous employees. We take pride in hiring some of the most loved people by the way of special needs community.

Business of the Month July 2022: Boot Hill Farm

Rick and Jennifer Bell have lived in Vernal all of their 51 years of marriage. They raised their six children at the base of what is presently termed “U Hill'', but known to longtime residents of the Uintah Basin as Boot Hill. In 1986, the Bells began a commercial hog operation appropriately named Boot Hill Hog Farms. As their children moved away from home on their own ventures, the pigs were sold and the hog farm dissolved.

When Rick and Jennifer’s oldest son, Bryan, and his wife, Jessica, graduated from BYU and finished a two-semester internship in Florida at Deseret Land & Livestock, they were provided the opportunity to build a home on the farm. With more children joining the family and the demand for milk increasing, the Bells invested in a Jersey heifer named Daisy. There was a lot of interest from neighbors and friends in any extra milk. It wasn’t long after the surplus of milk that Boot Hill Hog Farms simply became Boot Hill Farms. The Bells became a Utah Certified raw milk dairy and grass-fed beef smallholding. Boot Hill Farms now offers grass-fed lamb, chicken, turkey (seasonally), pork, and eggs alongside the 100%-pastured, raw milk and beef.

The gates are always open at Boot Hill Farms, where their mission is to “Bring Healthy Home”.
Rick serves on the county Board of Adjustments and the Uintah Animal Control and Special Service District Board of directors. Jennifer works with the Uintah Basin Visual Arts. They support 4-H and the Uintah Basin Junior Livestock show.

Bryan is on both the Uintah County Conservation District and the Utah Association of Conservation District boards. Bryan recently purchased Superior Meat Company which will now be called Bell-Mont Meats hopefully to open the end of August.

Quarterly Outstanding Public Service Award: Steve Jones

Steve Jones started his career in the hospitality field at the age of 14 working clam bakes at the Rod & Gun Club in his home town of Groton, New York. He fell in love with the combination of people, food, and fun and creating pleasurable dining experiences became his career.

Steve became a partner manager with Golden Corral in 1984. He partnered in the Nampa, Idaho and Logan, Utah Golden Corrals. He became an area supervisor in 1988 and supervised most of the Utah market and parts of Nevada. Vernal, Utah was one of the stores he supervised.

Tired of excessive travel and absences from his family, Steve accepted an offer from Golden Corral to franchise the Vernal location. November 8, 1990 Steve relocated his family of 5 to Vernal and began his ownership of this location. He purchased a second location in Riverton, Wyoming in 1993. Steve converted the Historic home on 200 South and Vernal Avenue into a restaurant and operated it as Curry Manor until 2002 when he sold it. Offsite catering was added soon after arriving in Vernal and continues to be a significant service opportunity.

Steve, his family and staff operated Woodfire Grill after the Golden Corral franchise expired. They operated a Quiznos franchise for seven years. Get Glazed Donuts started 2016. Get Grilled replaced Quiznos in 2018.

Get Glazed and Get Grilled were moved to the Woodfire Grill location in 2020 when COVID19 forced the closure of buffet style restaurants and operates as Glazed and Grilled today.

Very active in the community, Steve supports and is involved in many activities and events. He and his staff are regularly present to provide food for wild fire fighters, power plant outages and other catastrophic events. He assists many charity fund raising event such as 3K & 5 K runs sponsored by addiction recovery groups, sponsors holes at various charitable Golf Tournaments, and supports youth activities such as football, baseball and soccer. He often provides work opportunities for those in need. Active in his church, he has served in many leadership position, supported scouting, young men and young women. He and his staff donate their time frequently for charitable events. His hot air balloon has been source of respite for many.

Business of the Month April 2022: R&R Oilfield Services, Inc.

Rafael Vargas and his wife Rachel started R & R Oil Field Services, Inc. in March 2014. Rafael has always had a love for working on engines, both big and small. He became well known for his skills working in the oilfield. In 2020, R & R Oilfield Service purchased the L-795 engine line from Arrow Engine, giving them the exclusive rights to all parts associated with this engine. The only OEM supplier and manufacturer in the world. R & R Oilfield Services currently has 10 employees that operate South Texas, North Dakota and Utah.

Rafael & Rachel have always had a soft spot in their hearts for the youth of our community. They support many youth activities including 4-H, track, football, baseball and most youth programs. Any youth that comes in looking for a sponsorship they try to support.

Quarterly Outstanding Public Service Award: Marty Partridge

Marty Partridge moved to the Uintah Basin over 22 years ago. In 2004 she began a student internship working for Wright Orthodontics while in high school and has been with the company ever since. Her position there opened the door for her to become involved in many of the community events she participates in regularly today. In 2008 she began her work with Trees for Charity designing and decorating a single tree, sponsored by Wright Orthodontics. She has helped to design and decorate trees every year since. That has led to years that she has been involved in multiple trees for various families. Since then, Wright Orthodontics’ trees have won the Children’s Choice Award twice, and the People’s Choice Award three times. Marty’s love for the charity event and its purpose continued to grow and in 2014 she joined the Trees for Charity Committee, and a year later she became secretary. She has maintained this role since, in 2021 she became secretary for the Tree Foundation Board.

In the last nine years, Marty has also headed the design of four parade floats, sponsored by Wright Orthodontics, for Vernal’s 4th of July and Pioneer Day Parades. Many of which won the parade’s award of “Most Patriotic” and were also featured in the Wasatch County parades. Over the years, Marty has also been involved with various other community events including Vernal Hotel Haunt, school sporting events, charity golf tournaments, fundraisers, grad night, and school dances. Marty has also spent many years volunteering with multiple youth groups through Cub Scouts, helping in local schools, and various church callings.
Marty’s greatest joy comes from her family. She and her husband have 3 spirited and charismatic boys. Some of Marty’s favorite hobbies include spending time on the mountain camping, watching her boys play baseball, quilting, and just having a good time with her family and friends. Marty loves Vernal and couldn’t imagine raising her family in a better community than what she’s found here in the Uintah Basin.

Business of the Month February 2022: Beans & Brews

Beans & Brews—or “Beans,” as friends call them — is a staple around Utah and when Melanie Jorgenson decided to open a franchise, she chose Vernal as the perfect city to do so. In 2014 she moved to Vernal, met her future husband and have since had all their adult children move to Vernal as well!

Their favorite part of living here is how close knit the community is and how the whole town rallies when there is someone in need. They enjoy supporting the community and have donated close to 35,000 cups of hot chocolate and coffee to Holly Days, the Gobbler (5K for local charity), and the Naples Tree Lighting Ceremony!

Beans & Brews has been proud to sponsor various school organizations, Uintah School Foundations, Grad night and countless other associations. The only thing that makes them smile even more than serving your favorite beverage, is helping a cause they believe in.

They honor and respect our Law Enforcement Officers and are so grateful when they come in that they offer free coffee to any officer in uniform and happily provide a 10% discount to all Veterans.

Melanie said Beans & Brews business philosophy “is that their guests are the reason for getting up in the morning. We love greeting regulars with their favorite drink and getting to know their customers. Our shop is lucky to have a large lobby space with free Wi-Fi and a comfy seating arrangement - because of this we have all sorts of groups meet here including church groups, the Army National Guard who like to conduct recruiting and interviews here, the German Club and student groups that come here to study and chill, we even have a couple that come play chess every Sunday not to mention it’s a great place for a first date!”

The core of the business Melanie said is the Beans employees! They employ about 17 baristas who really believe they are “crafting your drink with love”, they take pleasure in interacting with their guests and creating a strong and sincere human connection– not only do they serve locals that come in every day but they get to meet tourists from around the world that are coming through our little town and enjoy hearing their travel experiences.

Beans & Brews are so grateful for their guests, their employees and this community that they love to serve and support.

Business of the Month December 2021: Little B's

Little B’s is a bar that now offers a full-service kitchen for patrons of legal age. This location, rich in history, has been a bar since 1929. Originally named the Brown Derby, it was shut down for gambling and then sold. It then reemerged as Kempton’s Pool Hall. In 1953 it was purchased by Bud Hacking who really put this place on the map with his country beer bar aptly named Bud’s Sportsman’s Lounge. Later, he added a Steakhouse. Rebecca named her business Little B’s in ode to her predecessors, and late father, Brent Boren who was nicknamed Mr. “B” or Big “B” by his employees.

Rebecca started in the bar industry 23 years ago working for her father’s tenant, Bob Francke at The Gateway Saloon. Rebecca eventually branched out on her own and purchased the old Bud’s building 12 years ago making it the successful business it is today. Mr. Francke elected not to renew his lease at the Gateway Saloon 5 years ago. Rebecca, 4th generation landlady of the Gateway Saloon excitedly decided to own and operate both bars. This year Rebecca and her dedicated staff (which she considers family,) have worked hard to bring back the steak house and honor Bud Hacking’s legacy. It is now open in the same part of the building it was while under Bud’s ownership and I can vouch that the food is very tasty! Rebecca’s spouse, Zach McReynolds has been there every step of the way to support and help Rebecca realize her dreams and making them a reality.

Their business philosophy is to give patrons a fun experience and then get them home safely. I can tell you it goes way beyond that. She considers all her long-time patron’s family as well and she goes over and above board to help out anyone in need.

Between Little B’s and the Gateway, they are dedicated to supporting the community that they love. They contribute in many ways:

Every year they serve free Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner. It’s a tradition Rebecca’s father started years ago.
Rebecca helped Gary Showalter and a few others start the Vernal City Excitement Association.
They throw at least 4-5 fundraisers a year for local folks in need and assist many other local fundraisers.
They sponsor Charitable Friends Of Ashley Valley, the Polar Bear Run, the Vernal Oilers, a softball team, and sometimes two teams
They sponsor the All Nighter, Rock The Ride For The Kids, and 2 charity golf tournaments annually.
They donate to the Uintah County Animal Shelter and other local entities.

They’ve brought in some very talented bands for patrons to enjoy over the years like Royal Bliss, The Iron Maidens, Redlands and Feel Never Real. Rebecca especially enjoys hosting amazing local talent. Many bands will play at this year’s 25th Annual Too Broke For Sturgis Run at the Gateway Saloon.

They honor and respect all of our Veterans which are granted free admission when they have to charge for an event.

Rebecca loves her sweetheart, family, our town, staff and patrons with everything she is. Her warm, loving and giving personality is infectious and that shows in her staff that go out of their way to help those in need and to spread cheer, especially during the holiday seasons. One employee has been with her 16 years, while other loyal staff has been with her as long as 12, 10, and 9 years.

Quarterly Outstanding Public Service Award: Marty Young

Marty Young, his wife Diane and youngest son, Grant first came to Vernal and the Uintah Basin in February 2001. He came to be the senior minister of Vernal Christian Church, doing so until retiring from that role this past February, a twenty year pastorate.
During those years up to and continuing today, the Young’s have formed a partnership of ministry and service to various facets of Vernal Community life. From his first role in the joint leadership of a city-wide prayer vigil on the lawn of the County/State Building, on the evening of 9/11, 2001, Marty has regularly joined in civic and government meetings to open proceedings with prayer. These mirrored the more private ongoing prayer efforts in small group settings on behalf of the town, its leaders and future.
In addition to leading and supporting congregationally related projects, like annual summer Bible Camps, Fall Harvest Festivals, Candle Light Christmas Eve Services open to the entire community, they have joined the efforts of other agencies to host and co-sponsor annual Back to School Supply Drives, Coat & Winter Clothing Drives as well as Turning Point Homeless Shelter, when it was in operation.
Their hearts to serve have also taken them out of the Basin to Idaho to work in a Children’s Home in Eagle, and out of the country for humanitarian efforts in Haiti & Cambodia as well as educational instruction in Vienna, Austria.
Marty would be the first to acknowledge that much of what he has been a part of in Vernal has merely been because he has made himself available. Looking back, it seems that when asked to join a committee or team that was seeking to make the community better than it already was, he generally said yes to the assignment and stayed with it until it surpassed the expertise or skill level he might beneficially provide or it was successfully completed.
He acknowledges that he joined the Vernal Chamber of Commerce because he saw its efforts doing just that. Out of that membership has come opportunities to be involved in multiple downtown improvement projects & community life enhancement events.
Following his retirement, Marty recently relocated into a downtown Vernal office space to launch some new ventures of service, thus still qualifying for Chamber membership, while observing 1st hand the needs of Vernal’s vibrant center.
For 15 seasons, He has been the courtside announcer of Uintah High School boys’ basketball and last year also did UHS baseball home games. That expanded this year into announcing Channel V6 football contests, calling Duchesne, Union games as well as Uintah. He says that he loves those gigs because it gets him in free.
Marty also enjoyed narrating Christmas Concerts of the Uintah Orchestra and Chorale in recent years and doing local radio spots for Evans Media Group.
Marty and Diane love living in the Basin, especially Vernal, and are grateful to have lived here long enough to put down roots and be considered natives. Their greatest regret is that their 3 children and 9 grandchildren live out of the area, but they admit to having their own special “family” here.

Business of the Month October 2021: Vernal Brewing Company

Vernal Brewing Company is a production brewery and gastropub. Vernal Brewing was founded in 2011 with a small homebrew supply store. In 2012, they broke ground and in April of 2013, Vernal Brewing Company was opened for business and currently employs 44 people. They brew 14 brands of craft beer with only the highest quality ingredients. They grow a large garden on the south side of the building which is incorporated in the dining and beer experience.

The philosophy of Vernal Brewing Company is to give guests the very best experience they can have, which includes their internal guests (their staff). The goal is to get people to try something new and bring the freshest ingredients to the table and to manufacture high quality craft beers for everyone to enjoy in UT, WY and Montana.

Vernal Brewing Co-hosts beer gardens at Vernal’s large festivals in the summer, such as Freedom Festival, JWP River Festival and the Dino “Soar” Days. They support several local charities including Children’s Justice Center and Charitable Friends of Ashley Valley. Vernal Brewing helps regularly with fundraising for local sports teams and events. In addition to other contributions, this year they will be serving the volunteers at the Hotel Haunt.

Vernal Brewing Company has won several awards including being voted the People’s Choice in several brew festivals and won Taste of Utah best restaurant. They have been featured on Taste of Utah, Mysteries at the Museum, and our Local V-TV. They have several award-winning beers including the Mama’s Milk Imperial Milk Stout.

Business of The Month August 2021: Downtown Auto Group

Downtown Auto Group was formed in 2017 as the Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and RAM franchised automotive dealership, serving Vernal and the surrounding areas. The company was found on the mission of inviting others to “Experience the Difference” by creating a business that focused on a unique customer experience in the Basin. They have over 20 employees who hold teamwork paramount. The company’s core values are found in the following 4 key areas, with a promise to:

Always strive to exceed customer expectations and make their experience, one they will always remember.

Business of The Month July 2021: Vernal Theatre: LIVE

Vernal Theatre: LIVE has produced 30 Season productions, 4 Youth summer productions, 4 benefit concerts, and has been the location for several events including Dry Bar Comedy tours, local dance recitals and pageants, and hosting a quarterly Open Mic Night as well as various classes and workshops for both youth & adults.

Vernal Theatre: LIVE believes that the Arts help individuals build better lives as they learn the value of other people and their stories and extend that kindness to themselves, their families and their community. The owners of Vernal Theatre: LIVE and all who participate live in Vernal and the Uintah Basin. We love being able to offer opportunities to people of all ages and experiences at the theatre, whether they are onstage, backstage or in the audience.

Vernal Theatre: LIVE is run 100% by volunteers – from producers & directors through the cast & crew. All participants at Vernal Theatre: LIVE are members of our community looking for talent development or a performance outlet and donate their time and skills to making each production. The sacrifices that they and their families make to bring about the success of each production is immense. There is simply no way to describe how incredible the people in this community are. The willingness of “regular people” to give of their time and talents show after show and year after year continues to bless not just Vernal Theatre: LIVE, but all those in the community with whom they come in contact.

Our mission is to inspire and create high-quality, family-friendly Arts opportunities that are accessible to everyone. Quarterly Outstanding Public Service Award: Cheryl Meier

Cheryl Meier is a lifelong resident of Vernal with the exception of a few years while acquiring her education on the Wasatch Front. She is married to Brian Meier and they have two children, Tyler and Ashlyn.

When her children started school, Cheryl became involved by volunteering in the classroom, serving as PTA President and served as Chairman of the Community councils at Ashley Elementary, Uintah Middle School and Uintah High School. Cheryl has served on the Trees for Charity Committee including as chairman for 3 years, the Holly Days Committee as volunteer coordinator and was an Ambassador for Make a Wish Foundation for the Uintah Basin Sector.

Cheryl has been a member of Uintah Recreation Board of Directors for the last 6 years and recently was appointed to the Uintah County Planning and Zoning Commission. She belongs to the Dinah-Mites, Goodwill Ambassadors for the Chamber of Commerce. She has served in many capacities in her Church but her favorite callings are the ones where she is involved with the Youth.

While she and Bryan were raising their children, she had the opportunity to coach them in every sport they played, hoping they would find their passion. Ultimately they chose to play tennis and ride mountain bikes, two things she had no desire to do, but, since she loves a challenge, she became the designated mom for both High School Boys and Girls tennis teams. As she watched her son mountain bike and loved what he did she became team director to a 40 rider team. At the end of 2019 she took over as head coach. In 2020 there were 83 kids on the team and 2021 team had to be capped at 100. At the 2020 State Race Cheryl was selected has Head Coach of the Year for 2020.

Cheryl has a passion and a love to serve in many capacities for her community and her family and plans to do so as long as she can. Cheryl acknowledges that her accomplishments wouldn’t be possible without her family and the many individuals that support her.

Caerus was named for the Greek God of Opportunity. Our name signifies our ability to proactively recognize and seize opportunities in the upstream oil and gas sector. From our inception in 2009 to the present day, Caerus has pursued a path of strategic investments leading to our present position in Colorado and Utah with over 7000 producing wells on over 650,000 net acres of leasehold. We employ approximately 280 employees, 76 of which are in Utah. We are headquartered in Denver, Colorado with field offices in Vernal, Utah and Parachute, Colorado.

At Caerus, we are committed to the vital role the Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) plays in every aspect of the day-to-day operation of our assets. Caerus employees picked up trash on 10 miles of Highway 45 and helped prepare and distribute 150 Back to School Backpacks for School Kids.

We are pleased to have with us today to accept the Business of the Month award Michael Rynearson from Denver Office. Mr. Rynearson serves as Caerus’ Vice President of Operations. Michael started at Caerus in 2014 and has led its operational team since that time. With over 30 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, Michael is responsible for promoting safety and ensuring strict adherence to regulatory compliance processes and procedures.
Michael attained his MBA from Regis University, as well as obtaining a Masters in Engineering and a BS in Engineering from Colorado School of Mines. He is a licensed engineer in the states of Idaho and Colorado, and a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. As an experienced board member, Michael has held positions with the West Slope Colorado Oil & Gas Association and a youth football organization. He has also authored multiple of industry papers. Michael lives in Westminster with his wife Christina.

Business of the Month April 2021: Beachin' Co

Beachin’ Co. was founded in 2016 by Colton and Brooker King. They love traveling to Hawaii and California and the feel of the ocean breeze. They wanted to bring that beach vibe to people who haven’t experienced it before and thus, Beachin’ was born. They quit their jobs, left their new home in Eagle Mountain, UT, sold everything they had, and moved to Vernal, with their new born son, with nothing but big dreams and lots of determination.

Beachin’ started in a 12’ octagon building with zero running water. Colton would bring 25, 5 gallon jugs of water down every day that he had to clean and sanitize between each trip. After about 8 months, Jiffy Pawn approached Colton and Brooker and offered to build a building where they could keep up with demand and that had running water :)

In 2017, they moved to Manti, UT for a short period of time to assist with the marketing needs of another company. During that time, they purchased the drink place there in town and converted it to Beachin’. Then in 2018, they purchased the soda place in Roosevelt and brought the Beachin’ vibe to there as well.

In 2019, Colton and Brooker came back to Vernal to be closer to where things started. In April of 2019, they built out a bakery where they could keep up with the demand of their baked good. “One of our desires at Beachin’ was to provide quality product that are fresh and homemade.” Says Colton. They distribute their cookies and pretzels bites throughout all their locations daily, to ensure product freshness.

“Our biggest priority is our guests that visit us each day and our 55 wonderful employees.” Each year Beachin’ gives a $500-$1000 scholarship to 3 different high schools, donates 15,000 - 20,000 free drinks throughout town/organizations as well as brings drinks/cookies to random schools/businesses throughout the week.

“We believe everyone deserves a vacation. Our goal is to give every Beachin’ guest a quick get away from life by providing five-star service, along with the best drinks and treats around. We eat and breathe Beachin’ every day. We commit ourselves to growing and making it the bet it can be with our guest and our crew members”.
