Jiffy Enterprises operates as a pawn shop that sells new and used items such as sporting goods, electronics, tools, home decor, handmade Native American bead work and jewelry, silver and gold coins, and fine jewelry such as necklaces, earrings, rings, and Pendleton blankets. Also Jiffy’s, is the largest music shop between Grand Junction and Salt Lake City.
Jiffy’s makes small consumer collateral loans and is a check-cashing business. It also functions as a sporting goods store, with all of your hunting and recreational shooting needs. Jiffy’s consistently places yearly as one of the top ten to fifteen firearm dealers in the state; competing with big box stores like Cabela’s and Scheele’s.
Pawn Shops are historically one of mankind's oldest institutions, with records traced back at least 3000 years ago to ancient China, Greek, and Roman Civilizations. Most people have probably sung about pawnshops without knowing. The nursery rhyme “Pop! Goes the Weasel” is an early English rhyme about pawnshops. A Weasel is a name for a flat iron that was heated on a wood-burning stove, and Pop is as another name for Pawn. The rhyme ends with: “that's the way the money goes, Pop! Goes the weasel”. Columbus' voyage to the Americas was financed by the Queen of Spain through her placing her crown jewels into pawn.
Jiffy’s, who have been in business for 47 years, was originally established in 1972 by Ivan Merrell. It was one of the first pawnshops in the state of Utah. Mike Merrell purchased the store from his parents and ran it until 2001 when he sold both stores, Roosevelt and Vernal, to Jared and Jason Dansie. Jared and Jason had long worked for Mike. Jared started working initially doing yard work at age 15 for Mike, then began shortly thereafter working the counter at the store. Jason started soon after, and they have loved working together as brothers along with their family and the community. They have strong family values and feel a duty to provide an excellent work environment, personal care to each customer, and give back to the community.
Jiffy’s helps support the local sporting community with events such as the Basin Knife and Gun show, Mule Deer Foundation, Rocky Mountain Elks. They regularly sponsor fund raisers to help individuals in the community with major health issues. They support many local charity events such as Relay for Life and Trees for Charity. They pride themselves in their relationship with customers, local businesses, and law enforcement. They support their employees who serve this great community by providing instant time off for any who work volunteer Fire, Ambulance, and Search & Rescue.
To the owners of Jiffy’s, Jared & Jason Dansie, Manager Jerry Bodily and the 24 employees, for all they do and the many contributions they make to our community, the Public Relations Committee of the Vernal Area Chamber of Commerce is very pleased to present Business of the Month.
